Theodore “Teddy” Corcilius of Roslindale, Massachusetts passed away peacefully at 95 years of age on January 9, 2024
Teddy was born at Boston City Hospital on September 15, 1928. He was raised in The Home for Destitute Catholic Children on Harrison Avenue in Boston across from The Church of the Immaculate Conception. He had no memories of his family. This humble beginning shaped him into a man with a deep, abiding faith in God, a strong work ethic, and a life-long dedication to helping others. He completed his education through the 8th grade. At that time, he was deemed employable. Teddy moved into a room across the street and continued to work at the Home for many years. He joined the Army in March of 1951 and was honorably discharged in March of 1953. He returned to Boston and went to work for Boston Housing Authority. He was at Whittier Street Housing Development for 39 years. He was respected and well-loved by the residents especially the children. Mayor Thomas Menino described Teddy’s career as an “example of unselfish dedication in service to the common good.” In his retirement, Teddy became well known in his Roslindale neighborhood. His dedication to Johnswood Footpath resulted in 40 stairs and the sidewalk in the middle of the path shoveled after every snowstorm clearing the way for the neighbors to come down the short cut to church or Cummins Highway and children to get to school. His work on the Path continued during the other seasons as well. In September 2017, in response to a petition by a resident on Johnswood Road, the City of Boston renamed the path Teddy Corcilius Way to honor and thank him for his service to the neighborhood. He attended the 4 o’clock Mass at Sacred Heart Church every Saturday for many years. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, loved his country, and was often out doing yard work to stay active and busy. In recent years he spent many a happy hour on the front porch where he loved to watch the children play in the school yard across the street and where he was visited often by his neighbors. Teddy never knew his family but is nonetheless survived by many people in his long-life including Leslie and Jim Cheney, Karen Burnett, the entire Simon Family, and Rock and Michele Bastianelli and their family all of Roslindale.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in The Sacred Heart Church, Roslindale on Thursday January 25, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment with Military Honors will be held on Thursday January 25, at 12:45 PM in The Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
