Stephen G. Whitty passed September 10, 2024 while being cared for at the VA Medical Center Boston.
Steve was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy, volunteering to serve his nation at the height of the Vietnam Conflict. Steve joined the Navy in August of 1967 from his hometown of Dedham, MA, and served honorably as a Commissaryman, the US Navy’s food service specialty rating at the time. He served at sea onboard the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67, so was a “Carrier Sailor” He was honorably discharged after 4 years of honorable service during the post-Vietnam drawdown of forces in 1973. Steve had advanced to the rank of Commissaryman Third Class (CS-3), a Third Class Petty Officer.
Steve joined the New England Center and Home For Veterans, NECHV Team last Century, in 1997, eager to assist and support his fellow Veterans. Steve has been a valuable contributor on the Operations and Maintenance Department, and served Veterans at the NECHV for 27 years!! Since September of 1997. A remarkable tenure of service. Steve has many-times stepped up and been THE go-to person on emergent facility and systems emergencies and repairs and has made an enormous contribution to everyone’s (Staff and resident Veterans alike) quality of life.
He was a resident of Court Street Veterans Housing, and a friend to all. His on-site residence helped make him an outsized contributor to the Building Maintenance Team, but what really made him so were his dedication, his work ethic, his can-do attitude and his willingness to tackle any job with persistent good humor, in every weather. He will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be held in the Robert J. Lawler and Crosby Funeral Home 1803 Centre St. West Roxbury, on Wednesday, September 25, from 11:00am to 12 Noon. A service with military Honors will be held at 12Noon. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Interment Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
