Maurice Thomas O’Donnell, also known as Morris by his family and Moe by his friends and co-workers, passed away on August 2, 2020, at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA after a tragic bicycle accident two days earlier. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Elizabeth as well as his older sisters Virginia, Anne and Clare. He is survived by his wife Susanne, his children Michael (Brandy), Kerilyn (Corinne) and Jennifer and (Wayne), his step-children Christoph and Vanessa as well as his sister Nancy and brothers Michael and Dennis.
Maurice was born in the Bronx on November 30, 1953. His childhood was full of life with his six siblings being involved in activities and mischief. Countless hours were spent playing basketball and developing into an avid learner. After graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from Cathedral College of Queens, New York in October 1975, he enlisted in the Air Force. He started off as a jet engine mechanic on C-141B aircrafts working his way up the ranks and achieving his Bachelor's and Master’s of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire. He finished off his career as a Lt. Col. at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 2003. Moving closer to home, he established roots at Hanscom Air Force Base as a civilian continuing to serve his country. Acton, MA became his final permanent residence.
Maurice cherished his family, raising five wonderful children by guiding them gently with advice and support. His motto was carpe diem and it showed. You could find him up early in the morning reading his Latin books, completing an exercise routine, cooking scrumptious omelets, volunteering to coach soccer in the afternoon and enjoying the evening in a dance class. Even though Maurice’s children were spread across the country, he stayed in touch with his grandchildren Emily-Clare, Aislyn and Ava in South Carolina, Henry Bronx in Chicago and Patrick, Brayden, and Deaglan in Georgia. As a proud Papa, he was happy to brag about their activities and accomplishments.
Later in life, Maurice started to find himself exploring new activities. From experimenting with watercolor painting, to flying drones, collecting treasures, and learning new languages, nothing was out of bounds. He enjoyed experiencing new cultures by travelling the world. Stops included Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Ireland, Scotland, England, United Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and his favorite, Switzerland. He particularly appreciated the town of Solothurn. He was intrigued how a small Roman trading post developed into a French Ambassador town.
Maurice had a way to make people feel at ease using his witty and thoughtful humor. Those who knew him well, might describe him as a fun loving curmudgeon. He was a caring and gentle human who was always approachable, like a bridge over troubled water.
He will be remembered for his continued service to his country, and always putting others first. His last gift was to donate his organs to other people to give them new lives.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we will wait to remember Maurice. We will have a celebration of his life when it's safe for those that loved and cared for him to gather together.
