Maureen Connerty Obituary

Maureen Ann Connerty passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024. She was born February 15, 1954, in Boston, the eldest of five children and the only girl. Maureen is survived by her daughter, Molly FitzGerald, her son-in-law, Christopher Fei, her mother, Elizabeth Connerty, and her brothers and sisters-in-law: Michael Connerty and his wife Susan, Tim Connerty and his wife Diana, Edward Connerty, and Susie Connerty. She was a loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Maureen was preceded in death by her father, Robert Connerty Sr., and her brother, Robert Connerty Jr.

A lifelong Bostonian, Maureen maintained strong connections to her earliest friends from St. Gregory’s in Dorchester. After graduating from high school, she went on to earn an A.S. in nursing from Northeastern University. Later in her twenties, she undertook a culinary training program, receiving a Professional Chef Certification from the De Gustibus Culinary School in Cambridge. In 1995, she took perhaps the bravest step in her professional life, completing a B.S. in Exercise Physiology at the University of Massachusetts Boston and becoming a Certified Health Fitness Instructor of the American College of Sports Medicine. Maureen went on to work at Hebrew Senior Life for 25 years, helping older adults stay active and age well.

Maureen’s enthusiasm for physical activity permeated all aspects of her life. She was a runner, hiker, cyclist, cross country skier, and more, always willing to try something new and eager to bring her friends along for the journey. Her love of fine food paralleled her outdoor hobbies. She continually experimented with new recipes and techniques and loved to explore the evolving Boston area culinary scene. Trips to New York City to visit her daughter and son-in-law were a favorite activity, and she was a devoted dog owner, most recently to Tucker, her loyal companion for the past 13 years.

For nearly a decade Maureen lived well with breast cancer. She received world class care just minutes from home and was even able to enjoy a two-week girls trip to Spain in April 2023. She passed away peacefully at home just one day after her 70th birthday, a milestone she was determined to reach.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Dana Farber Cancer Institute or Sweet Paws Rescue, a foster-based animal rescue that is lovingly caring for Tucker as they work to find him a new home.
