Mary Eileen Burke Obituary

Mary Eileen Burke, affectionately known as Eileen, of Boston, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the remarkable age of 100. Born on May 17, 1924, in Boston, Eileen was a lifelong resident of the city she loved.

Eileen was the devoted wife of the late William F. Burke and a cherished mother to Elaine Pimentel and her husband Richard of Needham, Catherine Gawlik and her husband Peter of Marshfield, and Paul Burke and his wife Julie of West Roxbury. She was a proud and loving grandmother to William Pimentel, Peter Gawlik, Meghan Gawlik, Lauren (Burke) Plummer, Annie Burke Yost, Ryan Burke, and the doting great-grandmother of four. Eileen was also a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.

The fifth of six children born to the late Mary (Durkin) Brennan and Martin J. Brennan, Eileen grew up in a close-knit family. She graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School for Girls in 1942 and then worked in the insurance industry. Her life changed forever when she met and married Bill, and together they raised their family in Roslindale.

Eileen lived a life filled with love, laughter, and family. She was an avid reader, an exceptional baker, and a frequent card player, known for her warm friendships and her famous blueberry muffins and mint brownies. After a 25-year career as a dedicated crossing guard for the City of Boston, serving several schools in Roslindale, Eileen retired but remained active caring for her grandchildren and spending time with her ever-growing family.

Eileen enjoyed traveling and made friends wherever she went. Eileen’s sharp Irish wit, radiant smile, and caring nature touched the hearts of all who knew her.

Private services will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

Flowers may be sent to the Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Center Street, West Roxbury.
