Mary Herberich Obituary

Mary Dawley Herberich, age 100, died January 8, 2023 at Newbridge on the Charles in Dedham, Massachusetts, following an active life devoted to her family, friends, and service to her community. Healthy and energetic into her 90s; she played golf, travelled, and was deeply engaged in civic life in her native New Jersey and in later years on Cape Cod.

Born in Plainfield, NJ, Mary graduated from Wellesley College in 1944. She and her husband Al Herberich lived in Westfield, NJ for 47 years before moving to Cape Cod in 1999. In addition to being the first woman appointed to the Westfield Zoning Board of Adjustment and serving as its chairperson for 20 years, Mary also served as a mediator for the Union County Dispute Resolution Program. Her other volunteer activities in Westfield included work on behalf of Children’s Specialized Hospital, the Presbyterian Church, and Wellesley College. Following her move to Cape Cod, Mary served as a member of the Yarmouth Land Bank Committee and volunteered at the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth and Cape Cod Hospital.

Her husband Al pre-deceased her in 2002, and she is survived by their three children: Susan Haskell of Winchester, Mass; Elizabeth Beach of Edgewater, Maryland; and Douglas Herberich of Brookline, Mass; as well as six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Mary’s family is extremely grateful to the caregivers and staff in the Memory Care Unit at Newbridge on the Charles for their extraordinary and compassionate care of Mary during the past three years. Services will be held in Westfield, NJ at a future date. Donations in Mary Herberich’s memory may be made to the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth, The Community Foodbank of New Jersey, or a charity of your choice.
