Arnold, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” was born on April 10, 1923 and died on May 2, 2021. She was born in Providence, RI, the youngest of six children born to Charles and Trinnett (Bardmaker) Arnold. Betty was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Charles, Dorothy (Drislane), Virginia, Robert, and James.
After graduating from Brighton High School, Betty attended Boston University’s Sargent College receiving her BS in physical education in 1945 and then earned her Masters Degree from BU School of Education. She had a special place in her heart for Sargent and continued to support the school throughout her life. She was proud to be the recipient of many Sargent honors, among them the Twiness Award, which was awarded to her twice.
Betty taught physical education in the Weymouth school system for 36 years. For many summers she ran a day camp in Yarmouth, MA emphasizing sports and the crafts. She enjoyed tennis and golf. Following her retirement in 1980 Betty traveled extensively both with friends and with church groups.
Betty’s love for her family was intense and she delighted in hearing about accomplishments of nieces and nephews and subsequently, their offspring. She is survived by 3 nephews, James V. Arnold of NC, Charles P. Arnold of SC, and Robert Arnold of MA, and 2 nieces, Jayne Arnold McMellen of FL and MA and Joslyn Arnold Sullivan of SC.
