Marcel F Schneeberger

August 30, 1930 ~ December 29, 2020 (age 90)


Marcel Frédéric Schneeberger died January 29, 2021 in Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 90.  Marcel was born on August 30, 1930, in Lausanne, Switzerland.  His 90 years took him far from Switzerland, but he was always Swiss at heart and in his soul.  Marcel earned his PhD in Physics/Mathematics from the University of Berne in 1958 and then worked at CERN in Geneva. In 1961, he was in the first group of CERN scientists to work at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia. Marcel Schneeberger and Maléna Dormond were married in 1959.  In 1962, Marcel, Maléna and their young daughter Diane emigrated to the United States, first to Evanston, Illinois, where he pursued research at Northwestern University, and then to Boston and its environs, where he lived the rest of his life.  He was an Assistant Professor at Brandeis University, and then worked at Control Data Corporation and RDP, Inc. before joining MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory in 1984, where he worked for the rest of his career.  He was predeceased by his father Werner and mother Katharina (née Z’graggen), and is survived by his wife Maléna; his daughter Diane Schneeberger and her husband Brian Snyder; his sister Madeleine Schneeberger; his brother-in-law Hans-Peter Straumann and sister-in-law Wanda Straumann and their children Daniel (Danzhu) and Nadine; his godson Markus Schneider; and his friend George Hand.  Ruhe in Frieden.
