Mullen, Kathy (Kathleen) of Dedham and Hyde Park formerly of West Roxbury daughter of the late Ernest (Buddy) and Mary (Murray) Mullen. Sister of Terri Kelley of Newton, Diane Harrington and her husband Rich of Medway, Patti Nickerson and her husband Nick of Quincy, Marie Mullen of Hyde Park and Bobby Mullen of Waltham and the late Tom, Billy, Michael, and Jimmy. Kathy also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.

Kathy was born on November 10, 1952 the second of our parents ten children and the first daughter.  Born in Jamacia Plain and raised in West Roxbury life was good growing up on Manthorne Rd in Holy Name Parish.  The neighborhood was full of large families and there always something going on or someone to take a walk up to Hynes field or Center St for an ice cream in summer or Christmas shopping in December.  Christmas Eve Christmas Caroling was a tradition as was back to school cook outs at the Mullen’s.  As the oldest daughter Kathy was the designated family babysitter most often seen with one of the little ones no matter where she was going.  She attended Blessed Sacrament High School in Jamacia Plain, riding to school each morning with our dad and having lunch with Nana Mullen every school day. Kathy continued her education at Northeastern University studying chemistry and socializing with her sister and cousin and meeting new friends.

Kathy made friends easily and held onto her dear ones for life.  She loved to travel and enjoyed warm beaches and cruises. Humarock beach in Marshfield was her favorite spot not only in summer but during the fall and spring it was her go to place to enjoy each season on the beach and stop at a local restaurant for a seafood dinner.

Kathy spent most of her career as a chemist with Bayer Corporation at NRC a Bayer subsidiary in Needham MA. Being Aunt Tacky of Kafi she dotted on her eleven nieces and nephews and six gran nieces and nephews.  They were her world never missing an opportunity to yes babysitting two more generations of Mullens. Never missing a birthday, first communion, confirmation, or graduation and always up for a celebration with the kids.  She had a passion for baking and cooking and hosting cookouts and holiday events with the extended family.  Many of the kids credit her with their love of cooking and just being a kind person putting everyone else first.  It took Kathy a while to say good bye because she was worried about each of us.  She was comforted as  every niece and nephew dropped in to see her over the last few weeks sharing a story and promising her we would be okay.

God speed Kathy we love you dearly.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Kathy's memory to Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Even Though I’m Gone

Time is a funny thing
I think that everything, it's still happening
Just in a different place
Things don't disappear just 'cause the view changed
So think of when we both had us a laugh
And I promise you that we're still laughing right now
We're laughing right now

So trust me when I say that I'm at peace
Every little flame goes out eventually

Though I'm already gone
I'm still the words I left behind
I'm still a memory to make you smile
And those will be there for a while
Though I'm already gone
When you look up to the sky
Just find a star that's shining bright
And know I'm right there by your side
I'm still with you even though I'm gone

And I wish that I could right my many wrongs
So quick to turn away, always waited too long
I'm sorry to the ones that I let down
And I was never perfect
So I hope it ended where I helped more than I hurt
I know I hurt

But trust me when I say that I'm at peace
Every little flame goes out eventually

Though I'm already gone
I'm still the words I left behind
I'm still a memory to make you smile
And those will be there for a while
Though I'm already gone
When you look up to the sky
Just find a star that's shining bright
And know I'm right there by your side
I'm still with you even though I'm gone

And I know
It's not easy, it's not easy letting go
So if you need me, you can find me in these notes
I'm still with you
I'm always with you

Though I'm already gone
I'm still the words I left behind
I'm still a memory to make you smile
Those will be there for a while
Though I'm already gone
When you look up to the sky
Just find a star that's shining bright
And know I'm right there by your side
I'm still with you even though I'm gone
So if you ever need me just play this song                                                                                                                                A letter from Kathy, written by Chester Lee.
