Joan Maher Obituary

Joan Fallon Maher

Of West Roxbury, died at home surrounded by family on December 29, 2025. Beloved wife of 53 years to Joseph C. Maher, Jr.; devoted mother of Catherine Gruber and her husband Matthew of West Roxbury, MA; Elizabeth Wright and her husband Jarret of West Roxbury, MA; Christina Roffenbender and her husband Jason of Arlington, VA; cherished grandmother to Annie and Jay Gruber, Ellie, Cici and Margot Wright, and Noah and Sophia Roffenbender; loving sister of Dr. Judith F. Niner and her late husband William of Rockville, MD; Dr. William E. Fallon and his wife Gail of Gaithersburg, MD; her twin Mrs. Jean F. Cunningham and her husband Richard of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; and aunt, cousin, and friend to many.

Joan was born in Washington, DC to the late Neil P. Fallon and Ruth O’Connell Fallon, whom she deeply admired as loving parents and caring professionals. Joan graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in counseling at Boston College, where she met Joe at the first mixer of their freshman year in 1967. She was a passionate, dedicated educator, and taught scores of students at Dedham High School, St. Theresa of Avila, and the Newman School. Joan was an avid reader and history buff, and her enthusiasm for both shone through in the classroom. She was devoted to her family and friends, and she and Joe created a home filled with love, generosity, and lots of laughter. She was a gracious hostess and fastidious homemaker, and her quiet strength and love have shaped generations. Joan had a wry sense of humor and was always quick with a joke, but most of all she was a kind soul and will be fondly remembered and loved by all who knew her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Theresa of Avila Church in West Roxbury on Monday, January 5, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions in her memory be made to The Ruth O’Connell Fallon Endowed Fellowship Fund at Boston College School of Social Work.
