Herbert Cantwell Obituary

Cantwell, Herbert M. of Needham, formerly of West Roxbury, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2023. Beloved husband of the late Frances Cantwell. Loving father of Norah Blaney and her husband Daniel of Quincy, Frances LeMieux and her husband Kevin of Philipston, MA, Amy Olson of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ruth Keeley and her husband Michael of Fayetteville, AR, Daniel Cantwell and Ann Spruill of Boston and NYC, Carol Cantwell and her wife Rachel Lanzerotti of San Francisco, CA. Beloved grandfather of Ellen, Maura, Hannah, Jenna, Thomas, Erin, Julia, Molly, Eric and Ryan and cherished great grandfather of Henry. Beloved son of the late M. Herbert and S. Alice Cantwell and loving brother of the late E. Claire Cantwell.

Herb grew up in Hyde Park and Mattapan. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Anselm College in 1954. After college Herb enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Anchorage Alaska.  He married his wife Frances and they lived in Alaska for about five months before settling in their home in West Roxbury. He worked for New England Telephone Company for many years and retired from there. His biggest passion was flying. He first obtained a private pilot’s license and then obtained a commercial license. While still working for the phone company he also worked part time for small aviation firms located at Norwood airport. After he retired from the phone company he continued to work for Boston Air Charter. Herb only retired from flying six years ago. Due to his many flying trips he was able to visit all fifty of the United States. Herb and Fran spent many summers in York, Maine where they enjoyed visits from their children and grandchildren. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral from The Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. West Roxbury on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 9:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in The Holy Name Church at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours in the Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM.

Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA at 1:15PM.
