Edward Hastings Obituary

Edward “Eddie” Vincent Hastings, 61, of Canton, formerly of West Roxbury passed away suddenly in his home on December 26th, 2023.

Eddie was born the second of six children to Nancy Hastings and the late Edward Hastings Sr. He was raised in St. Joseph’s Parish in Hyde Park. He met the love of his life, Ann Marie, in 1981 while working at Edward’s Food Warehouse in Hyde Park and they shared a beautiful 35 years of marriage together. His love for and devotion to his wife was evident to anyone who knew them and he was endlessly proud of his three children, Keri, Pat and Erin.

Right out of high school in 1981, Eddie took a job with New England Telephone company (now Verizon), beginning a career that would span more than 40 years. He started in the mailroom, and step by step worked his way up to Business agent, where he worked tirelessly advocating for the membership before finally assuming the role as President of IBEW local 2222 in 2015, proudly leading his union, until his retirement earlier this month.

Outside of work, he was a devout volunteer, who truly dedicated his life to helping others. Eddie was involved in too many charities and organizations to list, but he was most passionate about My Brother’s Keeper, the Holy Cross Retreat house, and he was a friend of Bill. He touched the lives of everyone he met and made a positive impact on each person that crossed his path.

Prior to his illness, Eddie was an avid runner, running multiple marathons a year. He loved being a part of the Parkway Running Club. He always brought the laughs and jokes, made sure everyone had someone to run with, no matter their pace. Ed made sure everyone felt part of the group, and was always there to talk about any more serious problems that someone was facing in their lives.

This encompasses how Eddie was in every facet of life. He was a loyal husband, devoted son, father, brother and friend to so many, who would do anything for anyone at any time. He was a man of strong faith and who saw the good in everyone.  His faith was infectious and he lived to share it with others.

May each of us find comfort in knowing the absolute strength and conviction of Ed’s faith has ensured that he is now experiencing a profound peace and joy that we all know he deserves.

Eddie was predeceased by his father, Edward Vincent Hastings Sr., and brother Paul Francis Hastings. He is survived by his loving wife Ann Marie Hastings of Canton, his mother, Nancy Hastings, his sisters, Kathleen Hastings, Mary and her husband Francis Hernon, and Patricia and her husband Michael Yanchuk, all of Norwood, Elaine and her husband Thomas Gately of Walpole, and his children, Kerianne and her husband Riley Beath of Norwood, Patrick Hastings of Virginia, Erin and her husband Peter Sweeney of Charlestown. Eddie is also survived by his mother in law, Ann Sweeney of Roslindale, his sisters and brothers in law, Kevin and Marina Sweeney of Foxboro, Patricia and James Bray of Norfolk, Kathleen and Greg Sheehan of Lexington and Sheila Sweeney of Foxboro and many loving nieces and nephews.
