David D. MacKenzie, a lifelong Bostonian and retired member of Iron Workers Local 7, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was preceded in death just weeks earlier by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Jane A. MacKenzie (March 17, 2025).
Born in Boston and raised in Everett, David remained a resident of Boston for his entire life—deeply rooted in its neighborhoods, history, and spirit. A proud graduate of Everett High School, he fondly remembered his years there, where he enjoyed participating in theatre and playing football. As a union ironworker, he contributed to some of the city’s most iconic structures, including the John Hancock Tower in 1976, the Rowes Wharf complex in 1987, and the Big Dig throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. David had a deep appreciation for the architecture and structural integrity of buildings worldwide.
David was proud of his Scottish heritage, a deep connection that he enjoyed exploring later in life with travels to Scotland where his granddaughter was born.
David’s commitment to community was reflected in his membership at the Boston Elks Lodge #10, where he was always ready to lend a hand, share advice on home projects or offer repairs to friends and neighbors as well.
David and Jane enjoyed traveling throughout New England, creating lasting memories along the way. For over 30 years, they had a home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where David built, owned and repaired homes with breathtaking views of the lakes and mountains. David’s love for the outdoors extended to his passion for skiing and golf, both sports he continued to enjoy well into his 80s.
David was known for being a steady, supportive presence in the lives of others. Whether cheering from the sidelines, showing up for a milestone, or lending encouragement, he offered his time and support without asking for anything in return. His quiet humor was always present, lightening the moment with a knowing smile.
He is survived by his daughter, Tricia MacKenzie, her husband Brent Ridge, his cherished grandchildren, Ruby and Ethan Ridge, brother and sister-in-law Jerold and Sue Aronson, nieces and nephews of the Aronson family, cousins, caring neighbors and the wider Boston community that meant so much to him - Dave was preceded in death by his sister Mary E. Michigan (May 22, 2006).
In lieu of a formal service, those who wish to honor David are invited to share memories and tributes on his tribute wall. Donations in his memory may be made to The Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
