Carol Barry Powell of West Roxbury, formerly of Waterbury, Ct. died peacefully at her home on February 20th, 2025. She was born on February 3rd, 1940 to Jack and Marjorie Barry. In addition to her parents, Carol is predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Philip C. Powell.
Carol was the consummate teacher. She attended The Elms College in Chicopee, MA graduating in 1962 and obtained a master’s degree as a Reading Specialist from The University of Hartford while working in her first job as a 3rd grade teacher in Waterbury, Ct.
Shortly after, she moved to Boston’s Back Bay with her best friends from the Elms, teaching 1st Grade in the Brockton Public Schools. Once she began her family, Carol took a break from formal teaching until she began teaching 1st grade at The Solomon Schecter Day School in Newton, MA. Carol spent more than twenty-five years at Schecter where she cherished her students and colleagues, developing lifelong friendships.
Carol is survived by four of her five loving children:
Marjorie and her husband Robert Tarte of San Francisco, John and his wife Siobhan Powell of West Roxbury, Katie Powell of West Roxbury, Rosemary and her husband Robert Whiting of Beverly. She is predeceased by her daughter Karen Powell of West Roxbury. One of twelve children, Carol is survived by Bob & Melanie Barry, Tony Barry, Jeanne Barry, and her sister-in-law Sandy Barry. She is predeceased by Ruth & Tom Commerford, Peggy & Rutt Parker, Jack & Rosemary Barry, Dorthy & Tom Crean, Eleanor and Patrick McSherry, Richard Barry, Paul and Kathy Barry, and Tommy Barry. Carol was a loving, engaged and proud grandmother and will be greatly missed by her eight grandchildren, Ryan and Abigail Whiting, Madeline, Aidan and Connor Tarte, Jack, Bridget and Pierce Powell. Carol was also a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Carol cherished and maintained many friendships throughout her life. She adored her friendships from her West Roxbury community and will be greatly missed by so many kind and loving neighbors.

Funeral from The Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. West Roxbury on Saturday March 1, at 9:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Theresa of Avila Church at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Friday February 28, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
