(Moriarty) Halloran
September 29, 1923 – October 6, 2023
Virginia Moriarty Halloran was the only daughter of Medora and Francis Moriarty of Worcester, MA. Gena was born on September 29, 1923 and she died a few days after her 100th birthday! She was married to Fred Halloran for 50 years. They married on July 9, 1945 after he lost both of his legs in Verdun, France in August, 1944 serving in Patton's 3RD ARMY. She was an amazing, loving, strong, brave, dedicated, and hard-working wife, Mother and Grandmother. Gena graduated from South High School in Worcester in 1940 and went on to Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. In 1961 Gena was the first female graduate of Assumption College in Worcester, 18 years before the college admitted women to their enrollment. At her 50th reunion Gena established an endowment at Assumption College in gratitude for the kindness the Brothers' extended to her in her time of need to complete her education. She received her Masters Degree in Education from Worcester State College. She was the Director of Pupil Personnel Services for the Worcester School Department until 1970 when she moved to New Seabury on Cape Cod and continued her career in the Dennis Yarmouth Schools and the Mashpee/Sandwich Schools as a School Psychologist. She was an avid golfer at New Seabury Country Club and was a member of The Cape Cod Women's Golf League. After retirement they moved to Atlantis, Florida. They enjoyed many years playing golf at Atlantis Golf Club. In 2000 Gena returned to Cape Cod, residing at The Ridge Club in Sandwich, to be near family after her husband, Fred, passed away.
Gena leaves her son Michael and wife Mary Lou of Mashpee and her daughter Mary Lou and husband Barry Neagle of Cotuit. She leaves 9 grandchildren, Brendan Neagle (Hilary) of Arlington, MA, Timothy Neagle (Caroline) of Richardson, TX, Elizabeth Halloran of Falmouth, MA., Virginia Halloran (Laurel) of Medford, MA, Margaret Lowdermilk (Justin) of San Francisco, Michael Halloran (Lauren) of Quincy, MA, Juliana Halloran of Charlestown, MA, Daniel Halloran of Chicago, IL., Mary Ann Halloran of Chicago, IL. and 13 great grandchildren. Gena will forever be remembered as part of The Greatest Generation! Her favorite Charities were HOMES FOR OUR TROOPS in Taunton, Ma ( Hfotusa.org ) and THE DISABLED VETERANS OF AMERICA ( dav.org ). Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 13, 2023 at 11 AM at Christ the King Parish, 5 Jobs Fishing Road, Mashpee, Ma 02649. Burial will be private at The National Cemetery in Bourne, Ma. at a later date.
