Dr Smita Pronab Roy (Sakar Ben) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 95 years on Nov 22nd, 2020, in Newton, MA, USA. For the past 5 years, she lived with her son, Late Dr. Nilay Kumar Roy and daughter-in-law, Dr. Roopali Roy. Before moving to the US, she lived for many years in Chennai with her daughter Niyati Shah and son-in-law, Chetan shah. She had three grandchildren, Nikita Roy, Chirag Shah and Viraj Shah. Sakar Ben Bharani was born in Kutch to Popat Bhai Bharani and Meethaben. She was a bright student who broke many barriers, becoming the first person in the Kutchi community to earn a doctorate. She was married to Pronab Kumar Roy and was known as Dr Smita P Roy. Dr Roy was the Head of the Foods and Nutrition Department at SNDT University Mumbai, till her retirement. She was the youngest among four siblings, Keshavji Bharani, Dr Shamji Bharani (Dr, Jethu Bhai) and Ratan Ben Lakhamshi Shah and was an integral part of her extended family. Sakar fui's genuine love and good wishes were apparent and she took a keen interest in the educational pursuits, of her brother's children, grand-children and great grand-children. She was a devout Jain who lived a simple life, and one could always count on her blessings on one's birthday. > Her pursuit of knowledge and enthusiasm for life were part of her indomitable spirit till the very end. She will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother.
