Obituary

SCHMIDT, Richard F. Age 88, of Boston, died peacefully on December 28, in the company of his family. "Dick" was a life-long resident of Roslindale and the beloved husband of the late Eleanor "Ellie" (Mahoney) Schmidt with whom he shared 52-years of marriage. It was Ellie who gave him his family nickname of "Chuck" in reference to his robust chucky-cheeks. He is survived by his 5 children: Rick and his wife Janice (Harpin) Schmidt of Brookline, Barbara Schmidt of Roslindale, Michael and his wife Wendy (Murley) Schmidt of Dedham, Diane Schmidt of Roslindale, and Mark Schmidt of Roslindale. Dick was an adoring grandfather to Hayley, Heather, Anna, Grace and Christopher Schmidt. Son of the late Joseph and Anna (Hoehner) Schmidt, Dick lived his entire life on Sherwood Street in Roslindale, where his quick wit and wry commentary on absolutely everything will be deeply missed by his neighbors. Dick served in the U.S. Army in Labrador during the Korean War and was a graduate of Burdett Business College where he studied business administration. Dick spent his early career with the Harry Miller Marine Hardware Company, rising to the position of Senior Vice President. He later enjoyed a 25-year second career as the office manager for Schmidt's Landscaping Services. According to his granddaughter Heather: "Papa claimed to 'know nothing about nothing'. Those that knew him knew that wasn't true. Papa taught us to be humble and always remember where you are from. Don't take yourself or life too seriously, laugh often and be the reason people smile when they need it most. He taught us the importance of taking care of others, that a listening ear and an open heart are all that you need. He showed by example how a man should love a woman. I think Papa new a little about everything and if you were lucky enough to know him, I think you'd agree." Private family services and internment will take place in the National Cemetery, Bourne, MA. A celebration of Dick's life will be arranged in 2021, when his many friends, family and neighbors can safely gather. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations in Dick's memory be sent to the charity of your choice.
