Richtmyer
May 18, 1943 – January 26, 2024
In Memoriam: Peter Mark Richtmyer (May 18, 1943 - January 26, 2024)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Mark Richtmyer on January 26, 2024, at Brockton VA Medical Center. Born on May 18, 1943, in Washington, D.C., Peter led a life marked by love, dedication, and a profound commitment to service.
Peter was the son of Allan and Marie (Kass). His early years were marked by a life of movement, reflecting the nature of his father's career as a tire sales representative for Fisk Tire. The family's journey led them to various places, and Peter attended schools in Kansas, Ohio, Michigan, and New York. Peter's academic journey took him through Poly Prep Country Day School, Williams College, and West Coast University, where he laid the foundation for a life dedicated to knowledge and excellence.
Despite being easily seasick, his career started through service in the Navy as a Lieutenant in Adak, Alaska, during the Vietnam Era, where he served as an Communications Officer and Operations Watch Officer. Peter's contributions earned him the National Defense Service Medal and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
Peter transitioned into a successful career in Systems and Software Engineering. His expertise in the development, integration, and testing of combat and weapon control systems for ships and submarines included the Zumwalt Destroyer and Tomahawk Launch System. Peter contributed significantly to the field, leaving his mark at companies such as Aquidneck Data Corporation, Raytheon Corporation, SEACORP, Northrop Grumman, and BAE Systems.
Beyond his professional achievements, Peter found joy in a mix of interests. He was a fervent supporter of veterans, actively participating in the Run to Home Base charity every year. Lacrosse, jigsaw puzzles, Solitaire, attending Red Sox games and other events, and the thrill of driving his Ford Mustang convertible were among the many passions that brought him happiness. Above all, his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren.
Peter is preceded in death by his father, Allan Grant Richtmyer, mother, Marie F. (Kass), and son, Peter Mark "Whitney" Richtmyer. He is survived by his brother, Allan "Rick", and wife, Carole Richtmyer, and their children, Jennifer and Steven, along with Whitney's wife, Wendy Richtmyer, and their children, Tyler and Alexis. Additionally, he is survived by his son, Joshua Richtmyer, and daughter, Ashley, as well as his son, William Richtmyer and wife, Karissa, and their daughter, Giuliana.
A funeral service to celebrate Peter's life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport, Rhode Island on Friday, February 2nd at 11am. A private burial will take place in Coxsackie, New York.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Run to Home Base and Shootout for Soldiers charities in Peter's memory.
