Obituary

Michael Joseph Toohey Sr. passed away peacefully in Boston, MA, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Born in Kansas City, MO, on November 13, 1944, to Paul G. Toohey and Mary (Downey) Toohey, Mike lived a full and meaningful 79 years.

A loyal friend and often the life of the party, Mike was known for his affable nature and his quirky habit of showing up unannounced to check in or catch up. An avid political reader, he was always on the lookout for the latest copy of the New York Times. Like many New Englanders, Mike was a regular at multiple Dunkin' Donuts locations, where he was, of course, on a first-name basis with the staff.

Mike had lifelong friends and maintained close relationships throughout his life. He loved his sons, their wives, his siblings, and their children, and he especially cherished the time spent with his grandchildren. He lived in Wellesley, MA, for over 30 years, where he raised his children and could often be found at the counter of the Linden Deli, chatting away.

Mike had a successful career as a salesman at Congress Flooring, where he was instrumental in building and growing the company for over 25 years. Later in life, he dedicated his time to the Bedford Veterans Affairs campus, serving in multiple roles where he is fondly remembered by many.

He is survived by his three sons: Michael Toohey Jr. of Holliston, MA, and his wife, Claire; Brian Toohey of Northampton, MA, and his wife, Clare; and Peter Toohey of Washington, DC, and his wife, Ashley. Mike was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: James, Leo, Robert, Mary, William, and Callum.

Mike is also survived by three sisters: Julie Royes, Joanne Adler, and Ellen Smith. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Toohey, and his sister, Suzanne Herlihy.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at a later date. The Toohey family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at the West Roxbury Veterans Affairs Hospital who cared for Mike during his final days, and to the many people at the Bedford Veterans Affairs who loved and cared for him for many years.

Thank you,
