Marie L
Lande
October 10, 1924 – April 20, 2020
Marie Lande, 95, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2020. She was loved by all and especially cherished by daughters Renee Hughes of West Roxbury and her husband Bill, and Helen Lande of New Jersey; and granddaughters Michaela and Maggie Hughes. She was predeceased by her husband Bert.
Marie was born and raised in London. During WWII, she was a "Land Girl" serving her country in the Women's Land Army and experienced the brutal blitzes and bombings of London. She met her beloved husband Bert while in the galleries of the London Royal Albert Hall at a performance of a Tchaikovsky symphony. Together they shared a lifelong love of classical music. They immigrated to the United States arriving in New York in 1950. They eventually settled into suburban life in New Jersey, raised a family, and lived the American Dream.
A gifted singer and self-taught guitarist, Marie entertained and united loved ones with her musical talent. In the mid 1960s she performed a solo recital at the venerable Carnegie Hall.
Marie and Bert loved to travel the world until he fell ill. She cared for him tirelessly up to his passing in 1999. Then, she moved up to Boston to be near family. She remained very active, enjoying life, making new friends, exercising and swimming at the YMCA, attending BSO concerts (with many trips to Tanglewood), and especially spending time with her two granddaughters.
Cheerful, unpretentious, warm, she had a knack for making people smile. She loved a hearty meal and a glass of wine in good company, so please let's all toast to her and a life well led.
Her family would like to thank the wonderful nurses, CNAs, and activities staff at the Deutsches Altenheim's Schrafft Pavilion for their dedication and compassion, especially during this difficult time of the pandemic.
A celebration of her life will occur at a future date.
