Kathryn (Muldoon)
Ahern
October 11, 1952 – June 21, 2023
Kathryn (Muldoon) Ahern, age 70, of Brookline, MA, passed away on June 21, 2023. Beloved mother of Regis, Lauren, James and Michael and dogs Bailey and Bianca. Adoring grandmother to Holden, Syrie and Chloe. Cherished sister of Susan, Nancy and Joan.
As a mother, Mom was tireless and endlessly creative with how she raised us. She taught us to work hard, support our family and friends and laugh our way through life's harder moments. The four of us threw everything we could at her- many broken bones and teeth, hospital stays, near-death scares, car accidents, ignored curfews, a move to Ecuador, and questionable friendships and romantic relationships. Despite giving it our all, she still managed to raise all of us into fully-fledged adults with most of our original body parts and families of our own.
Mom was born on October 11, 1952 in Quincy, MA to Dorothea and Charles Muldoon. She spent many happy summers at her Aunt Minnie's farm in Newburyport, where she began her days swinging from ropes in the hayloft and drinking milk that came from her aunt's cow. She attended Newbury College. When she was 19, Mom travelled to Europe with her sisters. Entrepreneurial as always, she discovered her opportunity to broaden her life experience by getting a job as an au pair in Rome. Her happy time in Rome led to her love of traveling, delicious food and fashion.
Mom always had a creative spirit and excelled at every hobby she pursued, most especially cooking and sewing. Her gougères and cinnamon rolls are unparalleled. She was a flawless chef, known for having only ever made one mistake in the kitchen (she mistook salt for sugar during a marathon day of baking pies and banana bread. Our tongues are still recovering). She didn't just feed us well, she also used food for medicinal purposes, such as hiding medicine we didn't want to take in ice cream sandwiches.
She made such gorgeous clothing for her grandchildren that strangers ask us where we got them. She also made fabulous greeting cards, jewelry and house décor and had a knack for interior design.
Her talents went beyond our home. She took over her father's sheet metal company when he retired and ran it successfully until her retirement. She financially supported all of us.
Athletically, she had some hidden talents, such as being a shockingly fast runner, especially when she was mad at one of us. She was an elegant skier and made sure we became great skiers as well. She loved long walks, floating in the ocean and swimming with her grandchildren.
For those of you who never got to eat the incredible meals she made, we are sorry for your loss.
A service will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 10 a.m. (wake) and 11 a.m. (funeral) at St. Ignatius, 28 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill, MA. Donations in her honor may be made to the Family House, www.familyhouse.org.
