(Shaw) Black
January 6, 2010
BLACK, Josephine M. (Shaw), of Brookline. Died peacefully on January 6, 2010, at age 98. Left to mourn are her sisters, Lillian Shaw of Brookline, MA, and Eleanor Dunbar of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, sister-in-law Marian Shaw, nephews John and David Shaw and their families, of Elgin, N.S., William H. Black of Reading, MA, and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Daniel and Elizabeth Shaw, sisters Marie, Margaret and Dorothy and brothers John, Newton and Dan, all of Nova Scotia. Ms. Black worked in the Boston University library system for 22 years and retired in 1985. For 77 years she was an active and dedicated member of the Church of the Covenant in Boston, where she was ordained an elder and a deacon. She was a tireless supporter of Boston Aging Concerns, Match-Up Interfaith Volunteers and the Committee to End Elder Homelessness, and she gave generously of herself in everything she did. Contributions may be made in Ms. Black's memory to the Church of the Covenant or to one of the above organizations. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Covenant at 2:00 PM on January 31, and her ashes will be interred at a later date in Elgin Cemetery in Nova Scotia.
