Joseph James
O'Connell
November 8, 1941 – March 22, 2023
Joseph J. O'Connell, a kind and thoughtful soul who touched the lives of countless people, passed away on March 22, 2023. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Joseph was born on November 8th, 1941, in Boston, and grew up in Dedham with his six siblings in a close-knit family that instilled the values of honesty, hard work, and loyalty. He put these values into practice throughout his life, becoming a rock for his family and a trusted friend to everyone he met.
Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Military in 1964 and did three tours overseas and was a proud U.S. Navy Sea Bee.
Joseph's work as a tractor trailer diesel mechanic was not just a job, but a passion. He loved nothing more than working in his driveway with his two sons, fixing cars, trucks, boats, and anything that needed fixing. He was always ready with a smile and a helping hand and took pride in his work.
But it was Joseph's family that truly brought him joy and pride. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Jean (Page) O'Connell, and a loving father to his two sons, Joseph Jr and Robert. He cherished the time he spent with his four beautiful grandchildren, Catherine, Robert, Grace and Zachary. They were the light of his life. He never missed an event, game, or birthday, not only for his children and grandchildren, but for his nieces and nephews as well.
Joe had a love for the great outdoors and a passion for boating. His love for boating was a true reflection of his spirit. It was on the water where he felt most alive, where he could let go of all his worries and simply enjoy the beauty of the world around him. To Joe, boating was more than just a hobby; it was a way of life, a passion that he shared with his family and friends.
Throughout his life, Joseph remained a humble and modest man, never seeking recognition or praise for his many acts of kindness and generosity. He was content to live a simple life, surrounded by those he loved, and to make a difference in his own quiet way. He was a staple at the Dedham Pool, where he worked as the morning lifeguard. He enjoyed greeting and getting to know all the swimmers, and worked up until the week before he went into the hospital. He will be greatly missed by all the patrons of the pool.
Joseph J. O'Connell's legacy will live on through the memories he leaves behind, and the countless lives he touched. His kindness, compassion, and generosity will be remembered by all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire others to follow in his footsteps. He provided his wife, children, and grandchildren with all of the love, comfort, hospitality, humor and stability a family could ask for.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents James and Agnes O'Connell, his siblings, Marie Clemens, John (Oakie), and James. He is survived by his loving wife Jean (Page) O'Connell, his son Joseph O'Connell Jr. and wife Karen of Medfield, his son Robert O'Connell and wife Andrea of Dedham, his four grandchildren, Catherine, Robert, Grace, and Zachary O'Connell. His living siblings, Terese Brown of Orleans, Lucille and husband William Howley of Marietta, NY, George Richard O'Connell and wife Carol of Dedham, and his nine nieces and nephews, and twelve great nieces and nephews.
Rest in peace, Joseph, knowing that you made a difference in the lives of so many, and that you will always be loved and remembered. We hope he is up in Heaven playing catch with his beloved Labrador Retrievers, Dozer and Gibson.
