Dicey Lenore Madden was born on December 16, 1919 in Macon, North Carolina to the late Henry and Bertha Palmer. Dicey was one of seven children. As a child she enjoyed escaping to the fields to read and enjoy nature. Dicey attended business school in North Carolina. She worked there as a secretary to the Wynn Family in Warrington for a year. Dicey then moved to Boston, Massachusetts. At age 27 in the year 1946, she accepted a job working for the Capp Family. Al Capp created the cartoon Li'l Abner of Dogpatch, KY. After sixty years of service to the Capp Family, Dicey retired in May of 2006. The Capp Family remained close to Dicey after her retirement. Dicey loved to cook and was an avid reader. She also loved writing poetry. She often sent and/or read her poems to family and friends. Dicey was an advocate for education. She believed one could never have enough education. She was famous for correcting improper use of the English language. Nutrition was also important to Dicey. She believed everyone should eat nutritious foods to feed the body properly. Dicey was married twice; in 1951 to Jimmy Walker, then in 1964 to Bruce Madden. God lifted Dicey from this earth into his bosom on February 9, 2012 at 1:15 a.m., in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Dicey was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Bertha Palmer; three sisters Lilly Jackson Riley, Carrie Beatrice Palmer, and Esther Marie Withers; two brothers Ether Lee Palmer and Floyd Atwell Palmer.
