Obituary

Christine Chenoweth Lazar October 21, 2026

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Christine C. Lazar, age 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Christie lived in Fairhaven for more than 20 years after raising her four children and living in Harvard, Massachusetts for more than 30 years. Born in Bronxville, New York, she was the daughter of Jane Ruge and Marion Chenoweth. Christie cherished being a wife and mother, and later a grandmother; she spent much of her life creating a home and environment for her kids and grandkids that reflected the joy and sweetness she felt. Her wit, warmth, and smarts radiated daily. Christie loved to laugh, loved to make jokes, loved to make the people around her smile. She was funny when life wasn’t. She loved her family fiercely, abundantly, and had such pride in her children and grandchildren, as though she was amazed at who they had become—as though she didn’t quite see how much of that was due to her. Her talents were endless. She was a fantastic cook and baker, offering her kids and their friends homemade treats after school, cooking elaborate dinners on holidays but also on weeknights. She baked well into her final years, offering all sorts of cookies and desserts, always ready to give a grandchild something warm and sweet, just like her hugs. She sewed prolifically, hand-making expert curtains for the houses she lived in, even making a special set to host her daughter’s wedding. She taught herself to tile floors and bathrooms, to refinish furniture, to garden, to hang wallpaper, to paint walls using special techniques. She made soaps and much-anticipated chocolates at Christmas. In her homes, it was always surprising to visitors how much she had done herself—how she never saw a challenge as something she couldn’t overcome, but she was so humble that she thought if she could, anyone could. In addition to her busy life as a mom, homemaker, tiler, wallpaper-hanger and so on, she was an active member in her churches, the first to sign up for a meal train, and the last to leave mass after chatting with, and checking on, everyone. She volunteered throughout her life at places like food pantries and domestic violence shelters, at her kids’ schools, and always looked to help out friends and family in need. It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to our beautiful mom, grandma, sister, and friend, but also with deep gratitude for the joy she brought to our lives, the humility and grace that she showed and taught us, for the love we carry forward to our kids that began with her. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Edward Lazar. She is survived by her four children, John Lazar, Jane Tucker, Mollie Charter, and Mike Lazar; her grandchildren, Lily, Sam, Ben, Amelia, Theo, Ethan, Emeline and Romee; her children’s spouses, Andy Tucker, Chris Charter, and Kata Lazar; and her sister, Tara Luers. There will be a memorial mass held at St. Mary’s Church located at 440 Main St., Fairhaven, MA on October 27th at 10am.
