Obituary

Charles Richard Mixer, formerly of Huntington, NY, Falmouth, MA, Fort Meyers, FL, died peacefully on September 23, 2022, at Bridges Epoch of Westwood after living with dementia for more than eight years. Charlie (aka Dick) was born on October 1, 1935, to Florence and Alfred Mixer in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He grew up in Belmont, MA and attended Belmont High School. After high school, Dick served in the Marines Corp and repaired tanks during the Korean war. Post-war, Dick received an engineering degree from Worcester Polytech Institute. After college, he had an incredibly long successful career that allowed him to be challenged, be a wicked smaht guy, protect the world (literally), travel, help other people, and have home(s) that everyone wanted to go to.

Most importantly after college, Dick happened to win a bet with his best friend to finally get a date with his older sister, Barbara, that lived directly across the street. There may have been a bit of a push back, but it was clear that Dick was in love with the girl next door, well, across the street. They eventually married and the rest was history.

There really wasn't anything Dick couldn't fix and if he couldn't fix it, he figured out how to (before Google existed). A tinkerer and taker of his time, he taught people to measure twice, cut once - a great metaphor on how he lived his life. His handiwork can be seen in many houses of his children, nieces, and nephews across the county. When he did find time to relax, his favorite place was in the sun – the hotter, the better. He loved to play golf, cook, and cheer on the Red Sox, but his biggest love was his family and he found great joy in watching his grandchildren participate in their childhood endeavors like playing hockey, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and rock climbing, sailing, and doing theater.

Dick was predeceased in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Barbara, and two grandsons, Andrew, and Declan. He is survived by his children, Kimberly of Fairfield, CT, Melissa (Larry) of Albertson, NY, Charlie (Jean) of Newton, MA, and Ali (Michael) of Windsor, CT, and his grandchildren Colin and Lillian Kennedy, T.K., Aidan, Grace and Fiona Murphy, Madison and Maggie Mixer and Brennan Coughlin. He had wonderfully long friendships with his brother in-law and sister in-law, Kevin and Marge Rose and close friend, Angelo Filosa (Joan). He was the adored "Uncle Dick" by MANY nieces and nephews and double the number of great nieces and nephews. Charlie's family especially wants to thank the people that cared for him throughout his long battle with dementia - Amy, Becky, John, Maura, Rebecca, and the loving staff at Bridges Epoch of Westwood.

A celebration of life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 10th at Good Shepard Episcopal Church, 1671 Beacon Street, Waban, MA, 02468. A military internment will start at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138. Reception to follow.
