Charles S.
Mcdonough
May 28, 1955 – July 23, 2023
Charles (Charlie) McDonough of Jamaica Plain, MA passed away peacefully at Care Dimensions in Lincoln on July 23, 2023. He is survived by his siblings John McDonough of Kihei, HI, Maryellen McDonough of Watertown, MA, Wally (Eileen) of West Roxbury, MA, Paula Tibert of Chestnut Hill, MA, Tom (Mary Lou) McDonough of Dorchester, MA, sister in law Kathy McDonough of South Yarmouth, MA and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. Charlie is predeceased by his parents Francis X. and Eleanor P. McDonough and siblings Francis X. McDonough Jr., Marguerite McDonough and Christopher McDonough.
Charlie was born on May 28, 1955 and in 68 years brought positive energy to everybody who was lucky enough to know him. Born with cerebral palsy, Charlie never let that condition define him and he lived a full life. After graduation from Boston High School (Boston's Work Study high school), Charlie enjoyed multiple different careers—landscaper, laborer, security officer at Boston City Hall, proprietor of Charlie's Skate Shop at Larz Anderson Rink and managing the gardens and public space in Copley Square and Rose Kennedy Garden for over ten years until his retirement in 2003. Charlie displayed a great work ethic, attention to detail and a positive attitude.
Charlie collected friends wherever he went. If you were his friend, there was nobody more loyal. He was a passionate supporter of all Boston pro sports teams, BC Eagles Football and alternately Don Bosco HS, Walpole HS and Brookline HS hockey, which were coached by his great friend and mentor Ed Kirrane.
Charlie lived the last nineteen years of his life at the Forbes Building in Jamaica Plain. He was loved by all there and always willing to help anybody who needed it with a kind word, a few bucks or physical labor even when his body should have told him NO.
Charlie's smile and dry wit will be missed by all who knew him, but most of all his caring heart.
Visiting hours will be held in the Robert J. Lawler and Crosby Funeral Home 1803 Centre St., West Roxbury, on Wednesday, August 2, from 5:00 to 7:00pm. A Funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Thursday, August 3, at 10:00am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations in Charlie's memory be made to Care Dimensions, 125 Winter Street, Lincoln, MA 01773 or online at giving.caredimensions.org
