Bernadette (O'Sullivan)
Manning
December 11, 1939 – December 1, 2023
Bernadette Manning nee O'Sullivan of West Roxbury, formerly of Weymouth and Dorchester. Originally from Ballinrannig, Ballyferriter, Dingle, Co. Kerry Ireland, in the peace of her sleep on December 1, 2023.
Bernie was the 11th of 12 children born to Sean Jim and Ellen (Fitzgerald) O'Sullivan. She was raised with the purest Gaelic in West Kerry and had a love for music and dancing. Bernie was a "Pioneer" and never took a drink of alcohol in her life.
She emigrated to the US in 1959 and worked as a nanny for several families before marrying Thomas Manning and settling in Dorchester. She and Tom raised their four children, John, Deirdre, Ellen, and Sheila on Meeting House Hill in St. Peter's Parish before moving to Weymouth.
After Tom and her only son John passed away in 2008, Bernie remained in Weymouth for several years before moving to West Roxbury to be closer to Deirdre and Sydney. She chose Edelweiss Village Assisted Living as her new home and made many friends over the years. She was so thankful to the staff at Edelweiss, especially Marie B, Shirley, Veronique, Abosede and Gina who treated her with enormous kindness and love over the years.
Bernie joins her father and mother in Heaven, along with her brothers, John (Chicago), Seamus (Ballinrannig), Michael (Ballyeightra) and sisters Mary Ellen Manning (Dorchester), Sheila O'Sullivan (Cork City), Noreen O'Sullivan (Jamaica Plain), Peg Quinn (Ballydavid), Kathleen (Chicago), Una (Chicago), Eithne Baker (Dorchester) and their infant sister, Eileen.
Unquestionably, the role of grandmother to Sydney and Thomas brought the greatest joy to her life. She loved them with all her heart and would proudly regale anyone who would listen with stories of their accomplishments and interests.
She traveled back to Ireland many times over the years and delighted in sharing "home" with us. Her heart and mind were never far from the beaches and strands, and the dances and friends she left behind. Without a doubt, her soul passed through West Kerry on her journey to Heaven.
It will surely be a wonderful Christmas for the O'Sullivan's from Ballinrannig, finally back together now, and for Tom, who has his bride back. They will surely be waltzing together forever.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday December 7, in The Robert J. Lawler & Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St. West Roxbury from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
